The new film adaptation Les Miserables may not make it into cinemas until 2013, according to producer Cameron Mackintosh.

The King's Speech's Tom Hooper is directing a "dream cast" in a new movie version of the musical which was expected to be released by Christmas 2012, but Cameron has admitted he doesn't know how long post-production will take.

He said: "It starts filming in March in England.

"I don't know how long it takes... we're certainly shooting through to the summer. I don't know how long it'll take us to do post production.

"I don't know if we'll make it by Christmas of next year, but certainly by some point in 2013. I know it'll be in that 2012/2013 set-up."

Russell Crowe will be playing vengeful police inspector Javert opposite Hugh Jackman as reformed prisoner Jean Valjean in the musical based on Victor Hugo's epic French novel.

Anne Hathaway will star as Fantine, Geoffrey Rush is said to be in the running for the part of drunken pub owner Thenardier, and Helena Bonham Carter could be his screen wife Madame Thenardier.

Cameron said: "We're getting an astonishingly good cast for with Tom Hooper at the helm. We've got Russell Crowe and Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne and many more to follow."

Rising star Eddie, who stars in My Week With Marilyn, will play revolutionary student Marius.
