Kevin Macdonald has said he was "lucky" to get Saoirse Ronan to star in his latest film.

The 19-year-old Irish star has the lead role in How I Live Now and the Oscar-winning director revealed casting such a talented actress was crucial to making the film work.

Talking about finding the perfect Daisy, he said: "We were lucky enough to get Saoirse, who is a wonderful actor. She doesn't need that many words, she communicates so openly through her facial expressions."

The filmmaker agreed that Saoirse impressed him with her American accent in the movie, which is about a rebellious US teenager who moves to England when World War III breaks out and ends up falling for her relative.

"All the films she's done, she's never played in her Irish accent, so people are really astonished when they come to the set," he said.

"They see her in Lovely Bones or whatever and assume she's English, but she speaks in a very broad Irish accent, and is always calling everything 'Grand'. 'Aye it's grand Kevin!', and then she can switch it on and off very quickly and easily."

Kevin - whose previous films include Touching The Void and The Last King Of Scotland - said he wanted to turn the book by Meg Rosoff into a film because it seemed "really original and unlike anything I'd read before".

"I don't go around reading a lot of young adult novels, but somebody gave me this and said, 'It's a really good book'," he explained.

"The main character was fascinating and I felt it rang true to what teenage life is like, while also being a very imaginative story."
