Sophia Loren is to make her big-screen return in La Voca Umana (The Human Voice), which will be directed by her son Edoardo Ponti.

The Oscar-winning Italian actress is ending her nine-year hiatus to star in the film, which is based on Jean Cocteau's one-person play, said The Hollywood Reporter.

The movie - which will be performed in Neapolitan dialect unlike the stage version, which was written in French - will be set in Rome, Naples and Ostia. Shooting is scheduled to start later in July.

La Voca Umana will be Sophia's first starring role in nearly a decade, following Lina Wertmueller's 2004 comedy, Peperoni Ripieni E Pesci In Faccia (Too Much Romance... It's Time For Stuffed Peppers).

The 78-year-old, who won a best actress Oscar for her performance in Vittorio De Sica's Two Women in 1960, previously starred in musical Nine as Daniel Day-Lewis' mother. She also starred in Italian TV film La Mia Casa E' Piena Di Specchi (My House Is Full Of Mirrors), an autobiographical film in which she played her own mother.

Sophia starred in Edoardo's feature film debut, 2002 drama Cuori estrani (Between Strangers).
