Victoria Wood has received a lifetime achievement award at a major event recognising outstanding women in the film and TV industry.

The writer and comedy actress - whose hits have included Dinnerladies and Acorn Antiques - was honoured at the Sky Women in Film and TV Awards, now in its 21st year.

Victoria was unable to attend the the ceremony at the Park Lane Hilton Hotel, so presenter Imelda Staunton accepted it on her behalf.

Imelda said: "I think she paved the way for many comedians, male and female. To have someone who can command all her shows, fill the Albert Hall, write music, do documentaries about Queen Victoria - it's slightly annoying! It's tremendous, what she's done."

Sue Perkins - whose television appearances in the last year have included hosting BBC One's The Great British Bake Off - was another winner, taking home the news and factual award.

Emily Watson, whose recent roles have included the controversial television drama Appropriate Adult about serial killers Fred and Rosemary West, won the best performance prize. She was unable to receive the honour in person.

The event was hosted by comedian Miranda Hart, accompanied by stars from West End musical Priscilla Queen Of The Desert, to celebrate the year's most inspiring women.

Last year's Strictly Come Dancing winner Kara Tointon, Absolutely Fabulous star Jennifer Saunders and actress/director Kathy Burke were among the guest presenters.

The achievement of the year award was shared by three winners - Sky News special correspondent Alex Crawford, CNN international correspondent Sara Sidner and al-Jazeera English correspondent Zeina Khodr, for their work reporting from the front lines of war zones.

The writing award was shared by Jo Brand, Joanna Scanlan and Vicki Pepperdine for BBC4's critically acclaimed medical comedy, Getting On.
