Legendary actor Omar Sharif dies aged 83
Legendary actor Omar Sharif has died at the age of 83.
The Dr Zhivago star has been battling Alzheimer's disease for some time and his sons Tarek made the revelation in May.
Sharif was born in Alexandria, Egypt and became a Hollywood icon in the 1960s with starring roles in Lawrence of Arabia opposite Peter O'Toole and later opposite Barrbra Streisand in Funny Girl.
An agent for Sharif confirmed today that the actor had died, but did not explain any more details.
Sherif was born Michel Demitri Chalhoub in 1932 and soon left his career with the family's lumber business to pursue acting in his native Egypt in the '50s.
