Denis Leary is in talks to play the father of Emma Stone in the new Spider-Man movie.

Emma is playing the love interest of Peter Parker/Spider-Man (portrayed by Andrew Garfield), with Denis tipped to be police captain George Stacy, who frequently comes into contact with the web-slinging superhero, said The Hollywood Reporter.

It would be the first big-screen role for the Thomas Crown Affair actor in eight years, following 2002's The Secret Lives Of Dentists.

He has, however, lent his voice to Diego the sabertooth in the Ice Age movies and scooped numerous nominations for his firefighters TV show, Rescue Me.

In Marvel Comics lore, Denis' character George died in an accident during a battle between Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus, which led his daughter Gwen to hate the hero.

The script for the reboot, penned by James Vanderbilt and Alvin Sargent, is being kept under lock and key so it is not known at the moment how faithful the big-screen adaptation will be.

The film is set to begin shooting in December, with a release date set for 2012.
