Kodi Smit-McPhee is in talks to play Benvolio in a new movie adaptation of Romeo and Juliet.
True Grit star Hailee Steinfeld, 14, will star as Juliet and Holly Hunter has been cast as her nurse, with Gossip Girl hunk Ed Westwick set to play Juliet's discontented cousin Tybalt, Variety reports.
Kodi, the 14-year-old star of The Road and Let Me In, would play Benvolio, Romeo's cousin who unsuccessfully tries to stop rivals Tybalt and Mercutio from fighting.
Shakespeare's tragic love story has been adapted for the big screen by Gosford Park and Downton Abbey writer Julian Fellowes and will be directed by Carlo Carlei.
The story sees young Juliet Capulet betrothed to nobleman Paris at a tender young age, but she instead falls in love with Romeo, member of rival family the Montagues, and runs away and marries him.
The young lovers eventually take their own lives, rather than be kept apart by their families.
Fellowes will produce with former New Line execs Ileen Maisel and Mark Ordesky, as well as Gabriele Muccino.
The film, which is set in Verona, is due to start shooting this summer, on location in Italy.
Kodi will next be seen playing Robin Wright's son in Ari Folman's The Congress and will soon be heard voicing the lead role in animated film ParaNorman.
