Keira Knightley is one of the actresses being considered to star in the big screen adaptation of Anna Karenina, it has been reported.

The film is being directed by Joe Wright, who previously worked with Keira in Atonement and Pride And Prejudice, and the Daily Mail said they have been talking about her portraying the tragic Russian heroine.

The 25-year-old would play the title character, a married woman who becomes a social outcast after she embarks on an affair with an aristocrat, in Tom Stoppard's adaptation of Leo Tolstoy's classic.

It is still early days, as no deals have been done and the film has not been given the official go-ahead.

Producer Tim Bevan said: "We're developing a number of projects with Joe, and Anna Karenina is one of them. There's something about Anna Karenina, Tom Stoppard and Joe Wright that sounds right."

It wouldn't be the first time Keira has wrapped herself up in warm furs to play a Russian heroine - she portrayed Lara in a ITV version of Doctor Zhivago in 2002.

Actresses who have portrayed Anna in the past include Greta Garbo, who has played the character twice, and Helen McCrory in a TV series a decade ago.
