Jeff Bridges is to star alongside Ryan Reynolds in a movie adaptation of comic book RIPD.

The Oscar-winning actor will play Roy, a deceased veteran police officer in the Rest In Peace Department, film blog TheWrap.com reports.

Ryan will play a police officer who has recently been killed. He joins the RIPD and tries to find his own murderer.

The Time Traveller's Wife's Robert Schwentke is directing the film, based on the Dark Horse Entertainment comic book by Peter M Lenkov.

The Hangover's Zach Galifianakis was reported to have been in previous negotiations for the role of Roy.

Zach is said to have dropped out over concerns that the project would be delayed if Warner Bros optioned Green Lantern 2, which Ryan would star in.

RIPD is due to begin filming in September in Boston.
