Jack Nicholson could be returning to the big screen in a baseball biopic about legendary black player Jackie Robinson.

The 74-year-old, and longtime baseball fan, has apparently been offered a role in the planned film, which will be directed by Brian Helgeland, reported Vulture.

He is tipped to be cast as Branch Rickey, the Brooklyn Dodgers executive who signed the baseball player to a contract with the Montreal Royals in 1945, before making history by signing him up for the Dodgers in 1947.

Robert Redford had previously been linked to the part.

"No one really knows the Rickey part, the political manoeuvres and the partnership they had to share. It's the story underneath the story you thought you knew," he told the Los Angeles Times.

As the first black Major League Baseball player since the 1880s, Jackie is a cultural icon after being instrumental in bringing an end to racial segregation in the sport.

Jack, who last starred in romantic comedy How Do You Know, was previously seen in 2007's The Bucket List opposite Morgan Freeman and received awards for his performance in 2006's The Departed.
