IRISH actress Antonia Campbell Hughes has been cast as real-life kidnapping victim Natascha Kampusch, who was held captive for eight years in Austria.

The actress, who has an Irish mother and English father, will play the young Natascha in the biopic called '3,096'.

Ms Campbell Hughes (29), who previously starred in Jane Campion's 'Bright Star' and Rebecca Daly's 'The Other Side of Sleep', will play the Austrian girl who was snatched by Wolfgang Priklopil on her way to school at the age of 10.

She was held captive by him in his basement for eight-and-a-half years.

The title of the film refers to the number of days she was held captive.

The Kampusch case became a world-wide media event when she escaped captivity on August 23, 2006.

Priklopil committed suicide the same day.

The film, directed by Sherry Hormann, will begin shooting in Munich next month with a projected 2013 release date.

Born in Derry and raised between Germany, Switzerland and the US, Ms Campbell Hughes first came to prominence in Jack Dee's 'Lead Balloon' tv show.
