Charlie Hunnam has confessed how proud he is to be part of Guillermo del Toro's "crew", after filming his second movie with the acclaimed director.

The 33-year-old British-born actor - star of Queer As Folk and Sons Of Anarchy - plays the hero in Guillermo's new action epic Pacific Rim.

And Charlie will also star with Benedict Cumberbatch, Jessica Chastain and Mia Wasikowska in the Mexican director's next film Crimson Peak.

Charlie said: "I'm so excited - I always dreamed of having a great collaboration with a filmmaker before. I grew up watching a lot of filmmakers that I love working with the same actors over and over.

"And at the end of this film Guillermo expressed that he really enjoyed working with me and I to him and he said, 'No, no really I want you in my crew from now on. I want you to be in all of my movies!'

"Obviously it really touched my heart but I didn't expect to get a call three months later. But the phone rang and he said, 'Alright man I'm true to my word. I've got another movie and I want you to star in it'."

He added: "It's so different from this [Pacific Rim] too. It's a much smaller movie, It's like a Jane Austen-type haunted house ghost story - again something Guillermo does so well."

Pacific Rim is about a team of pilots who power giant robots to battle monsters and try to save the world. Charlie, the hero of the film, said what makes the movie is the emotional story at the heart of the incredible action scenes.

"It's pretty exciting to be a small part of this movie, but more than anything just exciting to be working with this guy. I'm such a fan of Guillermo's and, after working with him, I see he's one of the real masters of filmmaking working today."

:: Pacific Rim opens in cinemas on Friday July 12.
