How to play a legend
One who got it right . . .
Michelle Williams (right) was pipped for this year's Best Actress Oscar by Meryl Streep, but was absolutely superb in My Week with Marilyn. Williams doesn't look like Marilyn Monroe at all, but a few minutes in you've forgotten you're looking at a performance, so completely does she embody her.
And some who didn't . . .
Faye Dunaway's portrayal of 1940s star Joan Crawford in the 1978 TV film Mommie Dearest was so wildly over the top it was actually enjoyable. But it wasn't very good.
More than 10 actresses have played Marilyn Monroe, but perhaps the worst was Misty Rowe. The heroically proportioned actress played Monroe twice, most regrettably in Goodbye, Norma Jean (1976).
A handy woman to have around in horror films, Jennifer Love Hewitt was oddly miscast as the petite, gamine-like Audrey Hepburn in The Audrey Hepburn Story, a biopic best forgotten.
