Jodie Foster, Samuel L Jackson and Ricky Gervais are among the stars being honoured by Bafta Los Angeles at the Britannia Awards later.

The ceremony, which celebrates British talent and Hollywood stars with a "strong connection" to the UK film industry, is recognising a host of A-list names this year, including Ewan McGregor, Felicity Jones and director Ang Lee.

Jones, 33, will receive the British Artist of the Year award after landing starring roles in a string of films in 2016.

The actress, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in The Theory Of Everything, can be seen opposite Tom Hanks in Inferno, based on Dan Brown's best-selling novel.

She will also star in the upcoming Star Wars spin-off movie, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and won critical praise for her performance of a terminally ill mother in A Monster Calls.

Kieran Breen, chairman of Bafta Los Angeles, described Jones as "one of the finest, most sought-after actors of her generation".

The Office co-creator Gervais, 55, will be honoured with the Charlie Chaplin Britannia Award for excellence in comedy.

The three-time Golden Globe winner revived his most famous comic creation this year for a new film, David Brent: Life On The Road.

Chantal Rickards, chief executive of Bafta LA, said: "Ricky Gervais is a comic genius. He is provocative, edgy, and his observations on life have brought us some of the best comedy moments ever in television and film."

McGregor, 45, will receive the Britannia Humanitarian Award to honour his work with the charity Unicef. The Trainspotting star recently travelled to northern Iraq to see how conflict in the region has affected children's lives.

Foster, 53, will be honoured with the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for excellence in film, while Jackson, 57, will receive the Albert R Broccoli Britannia Award for worldwide contribution to entertainment.

Oscar-winning director Lee, 62, will be honoured with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for excellence in directing.

Tom Hanks, Jake Gyllenhaal, Brie Larson and Christopher Guest will present awards on the night.

The ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel will be hosted by British actor and comedian Ben "Doc Brown" Smith. The awards show starts at 7.30pm local time (3.30am Saturday BST).
