Tom Hiddleston has said he would like to work with Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis, and that he is looking out for a "meaty" stage role.

The actor, who was picking up the best "breakthrough" gong at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards, confirmed he had finished filming Thor 2, where he reprises the role of Loki the evil Norse demi-god he played in Thor and Avengers Assemble.

The British star said he enjoyed performing a broad range of roles - including the Shakespearean role of Prince Hal/Henry V that won him his award.

And he revealed he wanted to return to the theatre in the future, revealing he was currently reading scripts in search of something "meaty".

"I always try to stay true to a code about choosing work," he said.

"I never want to just do a job for a job's sake, I want to do it because it is something I believe in."

He added that he would like to work with Daniel Day-Lewis, whom he described as one of his heroes as a young actor.

"He has always inspired me," he said.

"The commitment he takes on every time he chooses to work, the kind of work he chooses - he has never ever been bad in my opinion and you can always see that he has given 110 per cent."
