Anne Hathaway has promised that she and her Oscars co-host James Franco will not be making any cruel jokes at the awards ceremony on Sunday.

When asked by the Hollywood Reporter if she and 127 Hours star James were planning to follow Ricky Gervais' lead from the Golden Globes, The Devil Wears Prada actress insisted she wouldn't feel comfortable poking fun at people for laughs.

Anne said: "I can guarantee that if you're looking for someone to call people out, we're not your hosts."

She went on: "I think that humour is really difficult to pull off, and I'm not particularly adept at it. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it.

"Also, I don't mean to sound overly serious, but I am the youngest host in history and I have no business being cynical or calling anyone out. I certainly haven't earned the right to do that."

The 28-year-old actress admitted she was getting quite nervous about co-hosting the Academy Awards.

She said: "It's so different doing live comedy, that's kind of the scariest thing about it. Being funny in a movie usually has to do with how committed you are to your character. But standing up and telling jokes is not something that comes easily to me."

While Anne and James might not be telling any jokes that are below the belt, outspoken comedian Russell Brand has just been added to the list of stars presenting awards on the night, along with Scarlett Johansson, Hilary Swank and Josh Brolin.

Other presenters on Sunday include Sandra Bullock, Jeff Bridges, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Robert Downey Jr, Hugh Jackman, Reese Witherspoon, Cate Blanchett, Marisa Tomei, Nicole Kidman and Annette Bening.
