Harrison Ford has been injured on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII.

The 71-year-old actor was taken to hospital after the door of the Millennium Falcon, the spacecraft his character pilots, fell on him Thursday, a source told The Hollywood Reporter.

A Disney spokesperson confirmed the injury but did not provide further details about how it occurred, although the rep assured fans production is not expected to be interrupted.

“Harrison Ford sustained an ankle injury during filming today on the set of Star Wars: Episode VII. He was taken to a local hospital and is receiving care. Shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates,” the spokesperson said.

Reps for Harrison and Lucasfilm had not commented on the report at press time.

J.J. Abrams is helming the highly-anticipated instalment of the Star Wars franchise, which will reportedly be set 30 years after 1983 blockbuster Return of the Jedi.

The director just last week made a tongue-in-cheek reference to rumours Han Solo’s spacecraft would be making a return in the sequel.

Posting a photo on his Twitter account of a note pinned to what looks like the Dejarik table from the ship, which hosted the hologram game between R2-D2 and Chewbacca in Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope in 1977, his message read: “I wish people would stop leaking photos from Episode VII. And making ridiculous claims that the Millennium Falcon is in the movie."

The remark followed months of speculation about the plot to the sequel, and who would be its stars.

THR reports the film will feature several original castmembers, including Harrison, back as rebel Han Solo, as well as Carrie Fisher, who played Princess Leia, Mark Hamill, returning as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker.

Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o and Game of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie are the most recent additions to the film’s cast. John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow will also star.

Star Wars: Episode VII is slated for a December 2015 release.
