Maggie Gyllenhaal out-shone her male co-stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx at the White House Down premiere in New York.

The 35-year-old, who plays secret service agent Carol Finnerty in Roland Emmerich's action thriller, went for the wow factor in a show-stopping monochrome Christian Dior gown and Christian Louboutin shoes.

New dad Channing picked a navy suit while Jamie opted for a brightly coloured turquoise shirt with his grey suit as they posed for pictures at the Ziegfield Theatre.

"I think the movie is a party, it's like a good time. You're not supposed to sit quietly in your seat when you're watching it. I also think that this movie has got some interesting things to say about the world," she told reporters on the red carpet.

Channing stars as US Capitol police officer John Cale, who has to rescue the US President James Sawyer (played by Jamie) in the movie, when a paramilitary group led by Jason Clarke's character takes over the White House.

"It's an entertaining movie. Yes, it's about something dark and someone attacking the White House... It's a fun, popcorn family way to experience that," he said.

Jamie revealed he was inspired by Presidents past and present for the role.

"I lost weight, I watched President (Barack) Obama, watched President (Bill) Clinton, watched (George W) Bush just to see how to look presidential. It's a lot of fun to work out your childhood dream," he said.

White House Down opens in the UK on September 6.
