Gosling and Franco for Salinger?
Ryan Gosling, James Franco and Jake Gyllenhaal are among the actors who are rumoured to be in line to play JD Salinger in an upcoming film.
Producer Harvey Weinstein - co-chairman of The Weinstein Company with his brother Bob - is developing the movie with filmmaker Shane Salerno, which would be based on Shane's 2013 documentary about the famed American author, who died in 2010 at the age of 91.
Harvey told Variety: "Shane has created an amazing documentary about one of the most beloved but enigmatic literary figures of our time. We are glad he was able to take the opportunity to add fantastic new footage. We greatly look forward to sharing the new edition with audiences and developing a Salinger feature with him."
The film is thought to be focused on Salinger's life between his military service in World War II and the 1951 publication of The Catcher In The Rye, examining the effects war can have on an artist.
Shane - who produced and directed the documentary Salinger, which was released in the US on September 3 - has already signed up to write the film's screenplay. He began working on Salinger nine years ago.
"The company has long been extremely interested in Salerno's extensive research on the renowned author and feels the material will make for an incredible live action narrative," a statement from The Weinstein Company said.
Shane added: "This documentary has been an incredible journey and truly epitomises what it means to be a passion project."
A companion book co-written by Shane with David Shield, also titled Salinger, debuted at number six on the New York Times bestseller list.
