Jean Dujardin and Michel Hazanavicius have been congratulated by France's president following their Oscar wins for The Artist.

Nicolas Sarkozy said in a statement that the film, which won five Academy Awards including best picture, "demonstrates the exceptional vitality of our cinema and the success of our policy of supporting the excellence of this great French industry".

Dujardin scooped best actor for the silent film and Hazanavicius won the coveted directing trophy. The film also clinched gongs for musical score and art direction.

Meanwhile, in Pakistan the government honoured the country's first filmmaker to win an Oscar.

Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani said that Obaid-Chinoy would receive a civil award for her accomplishment.
