Fox: Emperor reflects my love life

Matthew Fox has revealed how his marriage spurred him on to sign up for World War II drama Emperor.

The Lost star admitted his real-life romance with Italian wife Margherita persuaded him to star opposite Tommy Lee Jones, because the film's love story mirrored his own life.

"My wife is Italian, and we fell in love with each other when we were very, very young. She didn't speak English great and I didn't speak any Italian, we were from two different cultures so I guess there were some parallels that I felt were important and moved me," he said.

"I was really moved by this script, which I was surprised by. There was something really beautiful about the love story and this guy's struggle in 1945 with the decision he is given to make, and how that is coloured by this love that he has lost and is irrationally hoping to find again."

On screen, Matthew's character Brigadier General Bonner Fellers falls in love with a Japanese woman Aya Shimada (Eriko Hatsune), despite the two countries at war with each other.

"I approached (the role) from the love story element... There was something about the love he found in Aya and the cultural differences with these two countries going to war, which was timeless and beautiful to me," added the 47-year-old.

Matthew - who said he speaks Italian "pretty well now" - admitted he was a bit clueless about the historical moment.

" I didn't know very much about this moment in time politically at all, so I thought it would be an opportunity to learn, at least superficially, about this moment in history. I'm always excited when the storytelling forces that," he said.

:: Emperor is released in cinemas on October 4.
