Two of Wes Anderson's fledgling film stars said they were taught some valuable life lessons by the cast of Moonrise Kingdom.

Kara Hayward and Jared Gilman make their big screen debuts as two 12-year-olds who fall in love, make a secret pact, and disappear into the wilderness together.

The film, which officially opened the Cannes Film Festival, boasts a bevvy of superstars including Bruce Willis, Edward Norton, Bill Murray and Tilda Swinton.

The two young newcomers, who were 12 when the film was made and are both now 13, said working with the actors had exposed them to some valuable lessons.

Jared said Bruce showed him the benefits of running through scenes before going on to the set while Bill passed on a little more than acting advice.

New Jersey-born Jared said: "I feel like I bonded with everyone just the same. Bill gave me some advice - hum in the morning before you go on set to kind of warm up my voice.

"He also taught me how to tie a tie."

For Kara it was her on-screen parents, played by Bill and Frances McDormand, who showed her the way. "Bill taught me quite a bit. Frances, Fran, she really set an example for me when it came to practising the scene beforehand."

Kara and Jared said their debuts had been a surreal but amazing experience so far, amplified by their appearance on the red carpet at the festival's opening ceremony last night at which the world's media were vying to take their picture.

Massachusetts-born Kara, who has been a member of Mensa since she was nine, said she will keep looking for parts. She added: "I'm still looking at opportunities. I'm waiting for something that is just as special and amazing as this."
