Film review: The Swell Season ***
(15A, limited release, 91 minutes)
Director: Chris Dapkins, Nick August-Perna
Stars: Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova, Catherine Hansard
This musical documentary was made a couple of years ago and could easily be dismissed by the mal-intentioned as yet another chapter in the self-absorbed life of Glen Hansard.
But I didn't live here in the 90s and missed all that anti-Frames stuff, so I quite enjoyed this slight but engaging film, which tells the story of the rise and fall of the travelling band formed by Hansard and Marketa Irglova in the wake of their Oscar success in Once. The film also charts their romantic relationship and gives a moving insight into Hansard's family life and the adversity he's overcome.
