Film Review: JFK's death in focus

Parkland (12A, general release, 94 minutes) Director: Peter Landesman. Stars: James Badge Dale, Zac Efron, Marcia Gay Harden, Jackie Earle Haley. HHHHI

Tomorrow marks the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination, and this solid and meticulous drama examines the contemporary impact of the killing by dramatising the reactions of peripheral witnesses to the event. Based on a book by Vincent Bugliosi and directed by Peter Landesman, Parkland has been given a bit of a rough ride by American critics, but I'm not entirely sure why.

Because through the fine work of a strong ensemble cast, it manages to give us a real sense of how the Kennedy shooting shocked a generation and changed America forever. And Paul Giamatti is excellent as the accidental photojournalist, Abraham Zapruder.
