Fast Five has raced to become Hollywood's biggest debut so far this year, taking in 86.2 million US dollars over its opening weekend.
The film, which stars Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Jordana Brewster, pulled in an even bigger audience than box office estimates and knocked Jesse Eisenberg and Anne Hathaway's animated comedy Rio off its perch at the top spot.
Other new releases included Disney's Prom, which was the fifth most watched film at the weekend in the US, taking in 4.7 million dollars, and Wenstein's Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs Evil, which came in sixth with 4.1 million dollars.
Tyler Perry's Madea's Big Happy Family came in third in its second week, and Water For Elephants - also in its second week - came in fourth.
