Trainspotting star Ewan McGregor could not resist a joke on Twitter about his famous film as he watched BBC Four's Trainspotting Live.

The actor is currently filming Trainspotting 2, the sequel to the original 1996 movie which first made his name around the globe.

McGregor, who is reprising his role as heroin addict Mark Renton, tweeted on Wednesday that the people on his TV screen were not "on the skag" - a slang term for heroin.

The Scot, 45, joked: "Watching this Trainspotting Live show on BBC4 likesay, but nun a these punters are on the skag likes. What's goin oan?"

Broadcast over three nights, Trainspotting Live captured the imagination of viewers as a team of enthusiasts and expert spotters reported live on a range of rail stock.

The programme was helmed by the BBC's Peter Snow, mathematician Dr Hannah Fry, presenter Tim Dunn and engineer Dick Strawbridge, along with a team of rail train enthusiasts.

It has won praise from viewers for its quirky subject and interesting content.

Earlier on Wednesday, McGregor and Trainspotting's Ewen Bremner, who plays Spud, were spotted sprinting along Princes Street in Edinburgh as they appeared to recreate the well-known opening sequence from the first movie.

The two actors were seen running out of Urban Outfitters - which had apparently been transformed into an Apple Store for the day.

Onlookers crowded round as Oscar-winner Danny Boyle, who was behind the camera for Trainspotting, directed the pair making a speedy exit out of the shop.
