Eric Idle has revealed he'd love to do a film adaptation of Spamalot.

The musical comedy, based on Monty Python And The Holy Grail, has been turned into a successful theatre show which has been a hit on Broadway and in the West End, and Monty Python star Eric would be up for adapting it into a movie.

"It's always in my mind and I'll find the right opportunity, the right place and way to do it - it has to be funny; the basic thing is, you have to get it right," he said.

"You have to decide what's the form, the format, will it work, does it have a chance of success on its own outside its root? That's the skill of adapting.

"It wasn't easy to adapt Spamalot as a Broadway musical. The Holy Grail is not much of a play. You work on it and find things that will work in the medium."

Eric - whose filmed stage performance of Not The Messiah (He's A Very Naughty Boy) will be shown in cinemas on March 25 - would be fully involved.

"What I really don't want to do is to remake the Holy Grail because that's like remaking A Hard Day's Night," he said.

"To try and do that again would be awful - you don't want to see older wider men banging coconuts in soggy tights. I think it has to be a completely different take, and when I find that and get to that level, that is what it will be."

:: Not The Messiah (He's A Very Naughty Boy) will be shown at cinemas nationwide for one night only on March 25.
