Emma Thompson claims the greatest personal sacrifice she has made in her career was perming her hair to play Mary Poppins author PL Travers in Saving Mr Banks.

The British actress joined Oprah Winfrey, Amy Adams, Julia Roberts, Octavia Spencer and 12 Years a Slave's Lupita Nyong'o for The Hollywood Reporter's Actress Roundtable TV special and had all the other stars in stitches with her funny stories.

Asked what the biggest challenge of her latest film role was Emma declared: "The perm!"

She explained: "My hairdresser said, 'It's not a perm, it's a kind of kink, you're going to look like Annette Bening. I thought Annette always looks great. I said 'It's not a perm' She said, 'No, no, no, it's fine.'

"So I came out looking like a sheep, and looked like a sheep for months and months. So it was wonderful for the part but it wrecked everything else in my life. I t was painful. Now that was a personal sacrifice !"

Oprah Winfrey declared to Emma: "Now you are the one to have at a dinner party, aren't you?!"

The actresses all discussed their scariest on-set moments, worst auditions and best advice they had ever had. Amy and Oprah swapped stories on crying for Steven Spielberg and Emma entertained everyone with her frank talk about not wanting to do a "muff shot".
