Dwayne needs to kick a bit more ass
Snitch (12A, general release, 112 minutes) 2 STARS
Director: Ric Roman Waugh Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Susan Sarandon, Barry Pepper, Benjamin Pratt
Is a Dwayne Johnson film really a Dwayne Johnson film if he doesn't get to kick someone's ass every now and then? It's a dilemma that the makers of this dour crime thriller ought to have considered before casting the big man.
The Rock plays John Mathews, a construction boss who's horrified when he finds out that his teenage son has landed himself in trouble.
After being persuaded by a friend to stash some drugs, Jason (Rafi Gavron) is arrested in a sting and sentenced to 10 years in jail.
His horrified dad persuades the authorities to reduce the boy's sentence if John can help ensnare a major drug dealer.
Snitch is competently put together, if a little muddled and slightly too long. The excellent Barry Pepper adds a dash of colour as an undercover cop, and Michael Kenneth Williams from The Wire plays a convincing hood. But while John is supposedly meek and mild, Johnson just doesn't look ordinary enough. And when The Rock is set upon by a gang of drug dealers, you find yourself wishing he'd just pile-drive the lot of them.
