Drew Barrymore to direct Oz sequel
Drew Barrymore is to direct a follow-up to The Wizard Of Oz about Dorothy's great great granddaughter.
The actress had originally been attached to star in Surrender Dorothy, scripted by Stranger Than Fiction's Zach Helm, when the project was first announced eight years ago.
But following the success of her directorial debut Whip It, she will now be at the helm of the film, movie blog Pajiba.com reveals.
The film sees Dorothy's great great granddaughter learn how to use the magical ruby red slippers to stop the Wicked Witch of the West from taking over Oz and Earth.
It is to be made through Warner Brothers and Drew's production company Flower Films.
Director and writer Josh Olson is also planning a Wizard Of Oz follow-up, and a prequel about how the Wizard got to Oz, which Robert Downey Jr is attached to star in.
The blockbuster success of Tim Burton's 3D live action Alice In Wonderland appears to be inspiring a lot of fantasy projects.
Disney has announced it will retell the classic fairy story Cinderella in live action. Deadline reports 27 Dresses writer Aline Brosh McKenna has been hired to pen the script.
