dramatic comeback: three star turns
Richard Linklater's overlooked comic drama is based on a true story and stars Jack Black as a much-loved smalltown Texas mortician called Bernie who murders an obnoxious widow, but McConaughey is brilliant as the infuriated prosecuting attorney who can't get anyone to say a bad word about the killer.
Magic Mike (2012)
Matthew really got to let his hair down in Steven Soderbergh's excellent drama based on co-star Channing Tatum's early experiences as a male stripper. McConaughey was terrific fun as Dallas, the corrupt and loquacious owner of a Florida male strip club whose outrageous routines are the stuff of nightmares.
There's always been a touch of the southern preacher about McConaughey's acting, and never more so than in Jeff Nichols's haunting drama Mud, in which he plays a homeless drifter who forms an unlikely bond with a young boy along the muddy banks of the Mississippi River.
