Disappointment for Irish fans as Ruth Negga misses out on BAFTA win
Ruth Negga missed out on the rising star award at Sunday night's BAFTAs, the only award category voted for by the public.
The Irish-Ethiopian actress is the star of Loving, a film that has had rave reviews on both sides of the Atlantic. It tells the true story of Mildred and Richard Loving, an interracial couple whose marriage was at the centre of a landmark US civil rights case.
She was nominated for the rising star award at Sunday night's BAFTAs, the only award category voted for by the public.
Negga, who has been nominated for an Oscar for the role, was widely tipped to win.
However, she missed out to Tom Holland who snagged the gong after winning the open vote.
As well as Negga, the British actor saw off competition from the likes of Anya Taylor-Joy, Lucas Hedges and Laia Costa.
The 20-year-old star took a break from filming Avengers: Infinity War’ to collect the award at the Royal Albert Hall,
Holland made his name with early roles in BBC drama Wolf Hall, In the Heart of the Sea and The Impossible, before hitting headlines when he was cast Spider-Man.
