The smash hit romcom was expected to be a flop when it was released on August 21, 1987 but Dirty Dancing eventually became one of the highest-grossing films of the year and turned Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey into superstars.
In the film, a shy girl with Ivy League ambitions (Grey) has a sexual awakening during a star-crossed summer romance with a topless dancer from the wrong side of the tracks (Swayze).
She also carries a watermelon, saves a dancer from a back-street abortion, stands up to her father for the first time and learns a lot about feminism, class politics and how to dance with abandon on her path to maturity.
The movie never really left the mainstream. The soundtrack is still one of of the best-selling albums of all time, selling an estimated 32 million copies. It's filled with theme tunes that evoke a sense of nostalgia for a bygone area.
