Dev Patel is in "early talks" to star in Neill Blomkamp's next film, Chappie.

The Bafta-nominated actor is said to be in negotiations to play a "young man in an impoverished town" in the upcoming sci-fi movie from the District 9 director, said The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.

Chappie has been written by Neill and Terri Tatchell, based on the filmmaker's 2004 short film Tetra Vaal, a parody commercial for a robotic police force patrolling the slums of South Africa.

Sharlto Copley, who previously worked with Neill on District 9, is already signed on to play one of the robot officers working in the shanty towns.

Former Skins star Dev, who has starred in The Last Airbender and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, will next reprise his TV role as Neal Sampat in HBO series The Newsroom.

The 23-year-old, who is dating his Slumdog Millionaire co-star Freida Pinto, won a number of awards for his performance as competition winner Jamal Malik in Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning movie.
