Johnny Depp has said Captain Jack Sparrow would beat his Lone Ranger character Tonto in a fight hands down.

Asked by The Sun who would win in a fight between Tonto and his Pirates Of The Caribbean alter-ego Jack Sparrow, Johnny had no doubts.

"It's over for Tonto, Captain Jack is far too dark. It wouldn't take long and it would be unpleasant," he said.

The actor, who has Native American roots, said it was important for him to represent his Lone Ranger character in a responsible way.

He said: "I have always felt that, in the history of cinema, the Native American has been portrayed as a savage, or something less of a man... But I have always had a fascination and a connection with them. This film was a great opportunity to be able to try to at least chip away a little bit at the cliche."

Johnny, 50, said he had taken inspiration from his great-grandmother's Native American background and wanted to make viewers think about the cliches.

He said: "My hope was to embrace the cliche so it's recognised by people who have been conditioned to watch the Native American and see how the Native American has been represented in film. So it was a kind of a trick in a weird way to suck them in, then switch him around and take them on a different path. Native Americans were only deemed savages when Christopher Columbus hit the wrong f*****g place and decided he was in India."

LaDonna Harris of the Comanche tribe took in Johnny while he prepared for the role.

She said: "I was just following tradition. Now I consider Johnny my son and he considers me his mum. I am sure lots of people are quite envious. When I told my other children they were quite surprised. But they have embraced Johnny and were happy to welcome him into our family."
