Dark thriller deflates

Stalker (18, limited release, 71 minutes) Director: Mark O'Connor. Stars: John Collins, Peter Noonan, Michael Collins, Stephen Clinch.

2 STARS

Mark O'Connor's brisk and frenetic low-budget Irish drama stars John Connors as Oliver, a mentally ill homeless man who sleeps in a bush, talks to pigeons and has long conversations with an imaginary evangelistic preacher. One day, he saves a teenage boy called Tommy from a pair of bullies. Oliver takes him under his wing, and when he finds out that Tommy is in thrall to a drug dealer, he sets out to save him. Though sketchily written, Stalker has a certain vulgar energy, and John Connors is very good as the mad but high-minded Oliver. Deeply unpleasant ending, though.
