D'Arcy on Southern fried food ban

James D'Arcy is getting in shape to play a villain in his latest movie

James D'Arcy has revealed he is dying to taste some proper Southern fried cooking while shooting his new movie in Atlanta, but he is on a strict diet.

The Cloud Atlas star is playing the villain in comedy Let's Be Cops, co-starring Nina Dobrev, Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr, and has to spend all his time in the gym getting into shape.

James revealed: "I've seen very little of Atlanta because the character I play is supposed to be in incredibly good shape, so I live in the gym, which is an experience, I can tell you. That's basically all I do is train at the minute.

"But at some point that will be over and I will be able to enjoy the delicacies of some Southern fried cooking. Up until now it's all grilled fish and vegetables."

James admitted he wasn't a fan of the gym, but he was happy to do what was necessary for the role.

"I do like exercise, I don't know that I like lifting weights, that's a bit boring. I like playing sports. But this is for a very specific reason. It's the same as any discipline that an actor might have to put themselves through.

"In the past I've had to learn the bagpipes. That's not necessarily my favourite thing to do either, but you do it because it's part of the job."

And despite it being his first major comedy role, James insists he is not funny.

He revealed: "It's a comedy, but I'm not. I play the villain. So Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr get to be funny but I don't. I get to frighten them."

:: James stars in In Their Skin, available on DVD from May 27 2013
