Dan Stevens has signed up to star in indie film The Guest.

The film is the story of a family who befriends a man who's just returned from a tour of duty, but the man is not who he pretends to be, according to Variety

It describes the movie, which is due to go into production later this summer, "as a very dark turn" for the ex-Downton Abbey heartthrob.

Adam Wingard will direct the movie, with Simon Barrett writing the script.

Since Dan decided to quit Downton and his character Matthew Crawley was killed off at Christmas in a car crash, the British actor has been making a name for himself in Hollywood.

He has filmed The Fifth Estate, Summer In February and most recently A Walk Among Tombstones. He also made his Broadway debut in The Heiress.
