Dame Helen Mirren's critics better watch out - the actress has joked that she holds a grudge.

The Oscar-winner - whose new movie The Debt deals with settling old scores - joked about having a long memory when it comes to bad reviews.

"I hold a grudge, oh yes, mostly against critics!" she teased.

Dame Helen hit the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival for a special gala screening of the movie, in which she plays a former Mossad agent who must go back undercover to track down a Nazi war criminal.

"This [role] is very different," she explained.

"Whenever I play something I'm just longing and praying for something completely different to come along.

"Playing the Queen, for a while people thought I was the Queen, and I'm significantly not the Queen!"

The 65-year-old gets her own fight scene in the action thriller, which is a remake of a 2007 Israeli film of the same name.

"You're always looking for roles that will push the last one out of the picture and allow the audience to see you in a new way," the actress said. "This one certainly does that."
