David Cronenberg has revealed he has got his eyes on the prize, as he looks to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

The Canadian filmmaker is competing for the festival's prestigious trophy with his new film, Maps To The Stars, starring Robert Pattinson, Julianne Moore and Mia Wasikowska.

"I used to race cars and motorcycles. I'm competitive enough that if you put me on the race track, I'm going to want to win. Sure, I would want to win the Palme d'Or," he said.

The director behind The Fly, Eastern Promises and Crash is one of 18 filmmakers in competition for the award, which will be selected by a jury headed by Jane Campion.

Olivier Assayas' Clouds Of Sils Maria, starring Kristen Stewart, is another competitor. The French director said premiering in competition in Cannes is "sheer adrenaline".

"Cannes for some reason has its own wave. It's really a matter of chemistry," he said. "You can be extremely proud of the film that you've made and blah blah blah, but you never know how it will interact with the film festival, with the vibe of the festival. You have to cross your fingers."

Grace Of Monaco, with Nicole Kidman in the title role, will open this year's Cannes on May 14. The festival boasts premieres of Bennett Miller's Foxcatcher, Tommy Lee Jones' Western, The Homesman, while Ryan Gosling will present his directorial debut, Lost River.

There will be a lavish party for the latest Hunger Games release, Mockingjay: Part 1, and a promotional event for Sylvester Stallone's The Expendables 3.

DreamWorks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg will show the animated sequel, How To Train Your Dragon 2, which will also celebrate the 20th anniversary of DreamWorks.

The 2014 Cannes Film Festival runs from May 14 to May 25.
