The Coen brothers have admitted they feel lucky never to have had a real struggle to find success with their films.

Directing duo Joel and Ethan found funding for their first film, Blood Simple, not long after Joel left film school, something they said was very different to the lead character in their new movie.

Inside Llewyn Davis is about a singer struggling to catch a break into the world of showbusiness and Ethan said of his own success: "It could have gone the other way. We're on the other side of the coin than this character."

Joel agreed: "We had enough success and enough stroking early on that we never felt like we were struggling and about to get bitter. We were incredibly lucky that way."

Talking about the theme of Inside Llewyn Davis, he continued: "But look around at all the people you know who do all kinds of things, a lot of those people are just as good as you are at what they do. And some of them really struggle. What is the reason for that?"

The brothers also revealed that the film they are currently writing would be set in ancient Rome and that they liked that it was an unexpected turn for them.

Joel said: "It's like, would you ever do a sandal movie?" Ethan added: "It's big."

Ethan also said that the Roman film would provide more answers than many of their previous ones had: "It's not like our piddly A Serious Man.

Joel agreed: "That was a cop-out. We just totally chickened out on that one."

Ethan admitted: "We hadn't grown up. In that respect, ok, we have matured. We're ready to answer the big questions now."
