Chris Evans will play Captain America in the new Marvel comic book movie.
The part of Second World War soldier Steve Rogers who becomes a superhero has been up in the air for some time now, with a string of actors considered, but The Hollywood Reporter's Head Vision Blog reports The Fantastic Four star has finally been offered the part and accepted.
Gossip Girl's Chace Crawford, Smallville's Michael Cassidy, Brothers' Patrick Flueger, and Friday Night Lights' Scott Porter are also said to be among the actors who were screen-tested for the role and ruled out.
Ryan Phillippe, GI Joe's Channing Tatum, Cloverfield's Mike Vogel, Wilson Bethel of HBO's Iraq miniseries Generation Kill are also said to have been considered along with John Krasinski, who stars in the US version of The Office.
The movie will be directed by Joe Johnston, and Hugo Weaving will play Captain America's arch-enemy Red Skull.
