Jessica Chastain has revealed she had a spooky experience with a ghost when she was a child.

The Oscar-nominated actress stars in horror film Mama, about two abandoned girls raised by a paranormal entity who follows them when they move to live with their uncle.

Jessica revealed: "I had an experience when I was a child where I thought there was a ghost in my room.

"I was sleeping, and I felt like something had taken my head and put it on its lap and was stroking my hair. My whole neck muscles got tense, and it was the most bizarre thing, but I felt like something was touching me. I yelled to my mom, and she came in. I was trying to explain it, and they searched through the house. I have not had anything like that since."

The 36-year-old actress also had terrible nightmares when she was younger, from watching scary movies.

She recalled: "I used to have really, really bad nightmares as a child maybe because I used to watch horror films before I was ready to.

"I remember waking up in the middle of the night and being so scared that there would be something under my bed, or that there would be someone there. I would get scared and pull the covers over my face, and I would be sweating. I was always afraid to take the covers off because I was afraid that the second I would do it, there would be someone just sitting there staring at me, or a monster.

"We ended up finding out - and this is actually true - you get a nightmare when you overheat. That is how your body wakes you up. We were trying to figure out why I was having such bad nightmares. That is why you wake up from a nightmare, sweating, because your body is overheated and it is trying to wake you up."

:: Mama is out now on Blu-ray and DVD.
