Steve Carrell is tipped to play a linguistics professor

Steve Carell will swap comedy for drama in the new film Dogs Of Babel, according to reports

The US funnyman, best known for comedies like The 40-Year-Old Virgin, Anchorman and Dinner For Schmucks, would star and produce the big-screen adaptation of Carolyn Parkhurst's novel, said The Hollywood Reporter.

He would play a grief-stricken linguistics professor who finds his wife dead in his garden, and while the police rule her death an accident, he goes in search of the truth.

With the only witness being the couple's dog, the professor aims to teach the pet to talk so he can uncover what really happened.

No director has been announced yet - The Hangover's Todd Phillips was initially attached to direct and produce.

The US Office actor Steve - who next stars in romantic comedy Crazy, Stupid Love with Ryan Gosling - showed off a more serious side in Dan In Real Life and Little Miss Sunshine.
