Sandra Bullock has soared to new heights, after being named as the year's highest-earning actress in Hollywood.

The Oscar-winning actress beat Jennifer Lawrence and Jennifer Aniston to the top spot after she earned an estimated 51 million US dollars (£30 million) in the last year - mostly thanks to her award-winning role as an astronaut stranded in space in Alfonso Cuaron's drama, Gravity, according to Forbes.com.

The Oscar-winning film, which also starred George Clooney, brought in 716 million US dollars (£425 million) in global box office takings.

Jennifer Lawrence took second place on the list, with a reported 34 million US dollars (£20 million), boosted by her starring role as feisty heroine Katniss Everdeen in the Hunger Games franchise and Mystique in the new X-Men films.

Jennifer Aniston came in third with earnings of around 31 million US dollars (£18 million) following her roles in comedies such as Horrible Bosses and We're The Millers.

Iron Man star Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie - last year's top earner - completed the top five, with Amy Adams, Kristen Stewart and Scarlett Johansson among the top ten.

Despite Sandra's large pay packet, Forbes reported that there is a discrepancy between actresses and actor's salaries.

Females are still earning less than men in Hollywood, with the top ten women on the list earning a combined 216 million US dollars (£128 million), almost half of the 419 million US dollars (£249 million) that the top ten actors received.

Robert Downey Jr was named as the top Hollywood actor, having received around 75 million US dollars (£44.5 million) for the second year in a row, thanks to the Iron Man trilogy and Avengers films.
