Josh Brolin is the latest actor to join the star-studded cast of Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice.

The Gangster Squad actor is set to star alongside Joaquin Phoenix, Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson in the big-screen adaptation of Thomas Pynchon's detective novel, reported Deadline.

Sean Penn is also considering a part in the film, while Martin Short and Jena Malone have already signed up.

Set in Los Angeles in 1969, dark drama Inherent Vice follows private eye Doc Sportello, a drug addict experiencing the end of an era as free love comes to an end.

Paul, who previously worked with Joaquin on The Master, is looking to start shooting the film in the summer.

Josh - who has starred in Men In Black 3, Milk and No Country For Old Men - will next be seen in Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's Sin City sequel, A Dame To Kill For, alongside Bruce Willis and Jessica Alba.

He also stars in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake with Elizabeth Olsen and Samuel L Jackson and Jason Reitman's drama Labor Day opposite Kate Winslet.
