Kristen Wiig's comedy Bridesmaids has been nominated alongside Steven Spielberg's historical epic War Horse for the top honour from the Producers Guild of America.

Also nominated for the guild's top prize are two George Clooney films, his political saga The Ides of March and family drama The Descendants.

The Producers Guild's Theatrical Motion Picture award is considered to be a strong predictor for the Best Picture Oscar and the winner will be announced at the ceremony on January 21.

Deep South drama The Help, starring Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, silent film The Artist and thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo are also among the contenders.

Brad Pitt's pet project Moneyball, a baseball movie he starred in and produced, will also compete for the award against Martin Scorsese's 3D adventure Hugo and Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris.

The Guild also announced its nominees for Animated Theatrical Motion Picture, recognising The Adventures of Tintin, Cars 2, Kung Fu Panda 2, Puss in Boots and Rango.
