The Bourne Legacy's new spy character has one very big problem, director Tony Gilroy has revealed.

US actor Jeremy Renner has taken over from Matt Damon as star of the fourth instalment in the spy franchise, playing Aaron Cross.

The film's director told Total Film that the character would be very different from Matt's alter-ego Jason Bourne.

"He's certainly not the same guy," the filmmaker said of Aaron.

"He doesn't have amnesia and is not trying to figure out who he is. He knows exactly who he is, but he has a big problem. This character has another problem, one that is hopefully just as fundamental and mythic."

The US director said the complexity of the character attracted him to the film, which also stars Rachel Weisz and Edward Norton and is due out this summer.

"That was the only reason I would jump on this, otherwise you're just knitting together an action movie, and that's not that big a deal," he said.
