Cate Blanchett is set to star in the thriller Blackbird, reports have suggested.

The Lord Of The Rings actress is said to be attached to a lead role in David Mamet's "Hitchcockian nail-biter", which is set in the present day but touches on the assassination of John F Kennedy, reported Variety.

The film, which David also wrote, will focus on a woman who travels to Los Angeles for her grandfather's funeral. She soon unveils his hidden secrets, which "force her to discover the truth about a man who dedicated his life to making illusion reality".

The film is expected to start production in Sydney, with producers seeking financing at the Cannes Film Festival.

There is also another film about JFK in the works including Tom Hanks-produced Parkland, which stars Zac Efron and Paul Giamatti, and is about the events at the hospital where JFK died.

Cate, who reprised her role as Galadriel in Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, has upcoming roles in Woody Allen's Blue Jasmine, George Clooney's WWII drama Monuments Men and Terrence Malick's as-yet-untitled film.

She is also poised to play the evil stepmother in Disney's remake of Cinderella alongside Downton Abbey actress Lily James as the princess, which Kenneth Branagh is directing.
