Bill And Ted star Alex Winter has promised fans that a third movie is coming.
The actor starred alongside Keanu Reeves in Bill And Ted's Excellent Adventure in 1989 and Bill And Ted's Bogus Journey in 1991 and there have been rumours about a follow-up for years.
But he has now confirmed to Yahoo! Movies that the eagerly anticipated film is in the pipeline and that he and Keanu will be back as goofy time-travellers Bill S Preston Esq and Ted 'Theodore' Logan.
He said of the plot: "[Bill and Ted] will be 40-something and it's all about Bill and Ted grown up, or not grown up. It's really sweet and really f***ing funny.
"But it's a Bill And Ted movie, that's what it is. It's for the fans of Bill And Ted. It fits very neatly in the [series]. It's not going to feel like a reboot. The conceit is really funny: what if you're middle-aged, haven't really grown up and you're supposed to have saved the world and maybe, just maybe, you kinda haven't?"
Alex, who is now 49, went on: "[It's] answering the question, 'What happened to these guys?' They're supposed to have done all this stuff, they weren't the brightest bulbs on the tree, what happened 20 years later?
"To answer that question in a comedic way felt rich with possibility."
Alex said he and Keanu and Chris Matheson and Ed Solomon have all remained close and have been working on the story and script for some time, although he didn't give any details about when the film might be unveiled.
"We're in that world where producers are on, financiers are on and we're just working and reworking the script," said the actor.
"We, for one, are very excited to see what they come up with - and whether they're still rocking that awesome facial hair."
Galaxy Quest's Dean Parisot is attached to direct the film.
